International Criminal Court to Make Decision on Philippine Investigation Soon

Hague, Netherlands

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is expected to announce its next steps regarding the investigation into the Philippines soon, following the release of a preliminary examination report earlier this year.

The ICC is an intergovernmental organization that investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of committing the most serious crimes of concern to the international community, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The ICC's jurisdiction is complementary to national courts, meaning that it only intervenes if national authorities are unable or unwilling to prosecute these crimes themselves.

In 2018, the ICC initiated a preliminary examination of the situation in the Philippines, following allegations of extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations committed during the government's anti-drug campaign. The preliminary examination concluded that there is a reasonable basis to believe that crimes within the ICC's jurisdiction have been committed in the Philippines, and that the ICC's intervention is warranted.

The ICC is now in the process of deciding whether to open a full-scale investigation into the situation in the Philippines. If the ICC decides to open an investigation, it will be the first time that the ICC has investigated a situation in Southeast Asia. The ICC's decision will have significant implications for the Philippines, as well as for the broader international community.
